Podcasts on Communication

Everybody's got an opinion. Some of them like to share it. Podcasts are such a popular format for communicating these thoughts, that by nature, there are podcasts communicating about communicating. One podcast in particular that I'll be focusing on is Think Fast, Talk Smart: Communication Techniques by Matt Abrahams, a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business. The more recent episodes are more on leadership, but I listened to his episode #151 - "Get Hired - How the Right Communication Can Advance Your Career".

I thought this episode in particular was very applicable and similar to the methods we learned in Module 4 with our online resumes. This podcast also had similar information to some content in the textbook, like in chapters "Social Media Profiles" and "Interviewing Successfully" (Green, 2023). They discuss interviewee and interviewer tips, mention LinkedIn profiles frequently, how to respond in uncertain positions, and more on communicating during the hiring process (Abrahams, 2024). The episode was bite-sized, coming in at only 28 minutes (minus your regular intros). Despite this, it was jam-packed with information ranging from all over job-related topics and put together well. And didn't take forever for me to listen to for this assignment! I also appreciate the lack of ads, especially in the middle of the episode, and the speed of the conversation. I didn't even put it on 1.25x speed like I  usually do.

All in all, this podcast efficiently and effectively communicated its message on communication. It also provided routes to take for even more information by mentioning related episodes at the end. I feel that there's a time and a place for chatty podcasts. One of my favorite podcasts (Ologies, highly recommend) is long-winded and has lots of side comments, which I enjoy because it's meant to be a fun and casual interview-style podcast. (Alie is also hilariously relatable.) But when I'm listening solely for information, or otherwise not fun-and-casual, I don't enjoy random music pauses or ad breaks or anything that disrupts the flow of conversation. It makes me lose focus on the topic! Perhaps this is just a personal preference, but I definitely liked the overall formatting of this podcast and am even considering listening to more episodes recreationally.
